Artist Statement:

I have a cat.

I’m a keen observer of nature and it thus follows that I enjoy observing her antics.

In each cat portrait I strive to capture the fundamental nature of ‘cat’ from the solitary independence to the furry companion curled up on ones lap purring contentedly. so many aspects form the cat profile. In a pensive mood, at play, at rest, grooming or in a whimsical moment.

The techniques I employ vary according to the mood or aspect I wish to portray. With reverence to the cat I am most likely to opt for a realistic rendition of my subject, which invariably portrays it in a serious tone. I painted these cats directly onto white unfired glaze in cobalt blue, trying to maintain the immediate freshness of a moment without clutter placing focus on the essence of the cat.
